Most people are ideal candidates for SmartlipoTM laser liposuction, but age can play a role in whether or not the procedure will be safe and successful.
While some procedures can be performed on people of many different ages, there are sometimes restrictions on the minimum and maximum ages that surgeons will agree to perform a given procedure.
Does laser lipo have these restrictions, and what is the best age to undergo this procedure?
Minimum & Maximum Ages?
While there is no technical maximum age for Smartlipo, candidacy does tend to decrease as patients leave middle age. It is up to the doctor and patient to determine whether the treatment is a good fit based on the health condition and medical history of each patient.
On the other end of the spectrum, patients must be over the age of 18; most plastic surgeons will not perform laser liposuction on a younger patient. Some few exceptions exist, such as in the case of male breast reduction to treat teen gynecomastia in boys.
There is no so-called “ideal age” for a successful laser lipo procedure, although the surgery is quite popular among patients in 35-45 age range. These people may start noticing stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise the way they would like.
Younger patients (aged 18-34) tend to recover more quickly and experience better skin retraction, but older patients have also achieved great results with Smartlipo. Candidacy is highly individual.
Younger patients tend to have better skin elasticity, helping the skin to retract and tighten after surgery, preventing sagging and wrinkling in the treated areas. Heat from the Smartlipo laser fiber can help tighten skin, but it can only do so much. Older patients may not have enough skin elasticity for good results.
Smokers are never good candidates for any type of cosmetic procedure, laser liposuction especially. Nicotine products cause the breakdown of collagen in the skin and constriction of the blood vessels and capillaries in the skin, leading to a poor ability to heal after surgery.
As with any procedure, general good health is a minimum requirement, for safety reasons. Laser liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure requiring only local anesthetic, but it is still a surgical procedure requiring recovery time. Complications are rare, but can occur. These are less common in healthy patients.
