As most of the country starts hitting the gym this month, it can be a hectic time to put your 2014 weight loss plan into action. Don’t be deterred, however, by the crowds at the gym. Losing weight and getting fit is one of the best things you can do for your physical and mental well-being.

While it can be tempting to jump into a new exercise routine headfirst and train like mad, you may do better to ease into a weight loss program. Here are some of the reasons why rapid weight loss isn’t the best idea.

Loose, Saggy Skin

One of the main problems people struggle with after losing a significant amount of weight is skin that does not retract, leaving it loose and saggy. Skin is extremely elastic, but it retracts slowly, and in some cases (usually after extreme weight loss), it may never retract fully on its own.

The best way to help minimize excess skin after weight loss is to take your weight loss at a slow and constant pace, to help allow skin to shrink along with your shrinking fat cells.

Burnout

Resolutions are often broken, and when it comes to fitness, this is often due to burnout. It’s easy to start the year off strong, working out frequently and for long periods of time. But if the pace isn’t sustainable and reasonable, it’s easy to get burned out after the first few weeks. Engage in exercises that you enjoy, and remember not to overdo it.

Injuries

If you’ve never embarked on a fitness program before or have been inactive for a long time, you are more susceptible to injury from exercising incorrectly or too strenuously. Avoid injuries by learning proper form and procedures for your workouts and building up your strength and endurance slowly.

Tip: Many gyms offer introductory personal fitness sessions when you join during January.

Crash Diets Are Dangerous

Crash diets can help you lose weight fast, but they are dangerous to your health and can put your body into “starvation mode” which will eventually lead to gaining the weight back — and then some. Stick to a healthy, balanced diet, and give yourself enough fuel along the way to keep you strong and healthy.

Dealing with Problem Areas

If your gradual weight loss program hasn’t worked to resolve stubborn problem areas, there is another option: Smartlipo.

Smartlipo is a gentle laser liposuction technology that works best for body contouring rather than weight loss. If you would like an expert assessment to see if you are a SmartLipo candidate and learn more about the procedure, contact our New York City or Long Island liposuction specialists for a free consultation with our highly-qualified plastic and cosmetic surgeons.
