How to Keep Your SmartLipo Results

If you are considering laser liposuction, you may be wondering how to permanently keep your smooth skin and contoured body looking fabulous. First, we’d like to clarify that laser liposuction is not a substitute for healthy eating habits and regular aerobic exercise.

These elements go hand-in-hand for our SmartLipo patients who are looking to maintain their post-liposuction look. Laser lipo is also not a method for weight loss, though patients can lose up to a few pounds during their procedure (it’s the inches that matter). Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s look at some secrets to keeping that beautiful post-lipo body.

Taking Time for Yourself to De-Stress

We know it’s difficult, but making time for yourself is one of the success secrets of patients who maintain their trim physique after laser lipo. Whether it’s getting a massage (avoiding the treated areas immediately post-op), visiting the day spa, or getting a cup of coffee with a friend, all of these add up to better stress management. Stress can cause a number of problems for post-procedure patients during the recovery phase.

When we get stressed, our blood pressure goes up and that can affect the amount of blood that feeds the areas that were treated. Our laser lipo New York patients know how important it is to give themselves some “me” time after surgery. Another reason to keep stress under control is that it raises the body’s cortisol levels. Cortisol has been linked to an increase in body fat in the abdominal area and can contribute to weight gain.

Drinking Plenty of Fluids

It takes several months after laser liposuction for the treated areas to finish repairing. Since our bodies are made of 60% water (, 2011), post-lipo patients must drink enough water! This will help the healing process along.

When hydrated, the body can more effectively carry away dead blood cells and other byproducts that result from the procedure. Additionally, our bodies more readily flush out fluids when we are drinking enough. The result is that swelling is kept to a minimum.

Exercising Regularly

It’s no secret that working out can give us a lean, toned body. For successful laser liposuction patients, the secret is that they actually follow through. With regular exercise, the results of laser lipo can be permanent. The fat layer is kept trim through good diet and regular exercise while toned muscles keep the skin looking firm and smooth.

When patients don’t exercise after their procedure, weight gain can happen and muscles can become flabby. Even though fat cells are permanently destroyed in the treatment areas, the cells that remain are prone to becoming larger when weight is gained (just like all other fat cells on the body).

The result can be very upsetting to post-lipo patients because they can go back to looking like they did prior to the procedure. Even though life can get busy, make time for at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity 4-5 days a week.

Eating Healthy

One of the best ways to avoid weight gain post-lipo is to watch what you eat. Not only do our successful patients watch their caloric intake, they also make sure their diet is rich in fruits and veggies that come in a wide range of colors.

Dark leafy greens contain iron and vitamin K which, respectively, feed oxygen to the red blood cells and aid in clotting. These are especially important in the first few months after laser lipo to help the healing process along.

Citrus fruits contain vitamin C and are wonderful powerhouses that boost the immune system to help ward off post-procedure infection (a small risk for minimally invasive procedures like laser lipo).

Whole grains contain vitamin A and E (great for the skin) as well as vitamin B6 which supports the immune system. Another healthy habit of our successful patients is a reduction in the amount of sugar they eat.

Based on a 2009 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, sugar increases appetite and can contribute to overeating and obesity. That’s why it’s always a good idea to keep moderation in mind when it comes to sugar and sugary beverages.
