One of the leading advantages of Smartlipo over traditional liposuction surgery is the recovery period is much shorter. Since the procedure is less invasive, recovery is not as time-intensive or uncomfortable. You should not be "out of commission" for more than a few days.
Immediately following your Smartlipo procedure ...
After the surgeon has closed up your small incisions with sutures, you will be taken to a recovery suite, where a nurse will monitor your vital signs for a short period of time. Postoperative swelling is normal; be sure to have some loose, comfortable clothing to change into.
You will likely feel a little woozy as the local anesthesia wears off, and a friend or family member should drive you home. For the rest of the day, you may feel achy and sore - like you just completed a tough workout. This feeling shouldn't last more than a few days. It's best to get plenty of rest and relaxation - this is a terrific opportunity to enjoy as many books, magazines and television shows as you'd like!
The days following your Smartlipo procedure ...
We recommend that you refrain from any strenuous activities for several weeks after your Smartlipo procedure. Every patient is different; some feel ready to return to their normal activities within a day or two, and other patients need a bit longer. It's important to listen to your own body and not rush your healing process. As a general benchmark, many Smartlipo patients feel ready to return to work within about three days. If you need to take longer, that's OK too.
If our Smartlipo surgeon placed a compression garment around the treated area, you will need to keep it in place as long as we advise you to. This garment will help your tissues settle into their new position and provide extra support to the healing area.
As you heal, DO NOT apply ice packs or heat pads to the treated area, as these elements could cause complications. It is normal for blood-tinged fluid to leak from the incision site(s) for 24 to 36 hours after the Smartlipo procedure. Take the necessary precautions and cover your furniture, bed and vehicle with the proper protection.
If you have a fever, if any whitish or greenish discharge from your incision site, or if sudden redness or severe swelling during your Smartlipo recovery, please call our offices immediately.
The weeks/months following your Smartlipo procedure ...
Swelling should completely disappear within a several weeks of the procedure.
Because Smartlipo's laser technology remodels your collagen matrix, you should see your results gradually improve over the next few months. As long as you maintain your weight with a healthy diet and exercise, you will be able to enjoy your beautiful figure.
Set Up Your Home for an Ideal Recovery
Before coming in to one of our surgical centers for your procedure make sure your home is set up and ready for your return.
- Add blankets and comfortable pillows to those areas in the home where you may frequent in the week you are recovering so that you do not have to carry them from one room to another.
- Pick up any medications for your recovery and place them next to your bed so they are easily accessible.
- Stock the refrigerator with pre-made meals so you do not have to stand to prepare meals. You may also like to place menus for your favorite restaurants that deliver close to your bed so you can order in when you feel like it.
- Give yourself plenty of entertainment to keep you busy so you do not become bored. Boredom after surgery can lead to post-operative depression, which can then impact your healing process. Place your favorite books, magazines, movies and games in the places you will rest.
Remember that the days following your laser liposuction procedure will be as comfortable as you make them. Although healing time is reduced, care should still be taken to promote healing. A few extra days of pampering certainly can't hurt!
