If your gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) is primarily caused by fatty tissue, laser liposuction alone is usually sufficient to correct the problem. Laser liposuction of the male breast is performed using local anesthesia (you will be awake) at our AAAHC accredited facility as an outpatient (no overnight stay required).
There is very minimal swelling, bruising and downtime. The surgery can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours depending upon the complexity of the procedure. During the procedure, a tiny laser fiber is inserted through a tiny incision into the breast in order to melt the fat.
Then, a straw-like cannula is inserted to suction out the fat using a vacuum suction system. The result is a re-sculpting of bulging breasts into more attractive contours. If excessive glandular tissue is present, that will be manually excised by the surgeon using a semi-circular incision along the border of the areola.
Combination Approach to Treatment
In some cases, Our Doctors will combine laser liposuction with manual excision of residual glands if your male breast has more glandular tissue in it. A small incision is placed at the edge of the areola (colored part of the nipple) and the excess glandular tissue is cut away to produce a flatter contour.
In extreme cases of gynecomastia involving excessive skin laxity, additional loose skin may also have to be cut away and a breast lift procedure done.
Liposuction Recovery for Male Breast Reduction Patients
It is advised that you rest for the remainder of the day following your surgery, and limit your physical activity for a couple of days. For the first two weeks following your surgery, you will wear a special compression garment.
Some men experience a mild degree of swelling, bruising and tenderness which should subside in a short time. In most cases, the discomfort associated with the surgery can be controlled with Tylenol alone.
Most patients return to work in about 3 days while avoiding strenuous physical activities for two weeks. Following your breast reduction surgery, you will enjoy a new, more pleasing shape. Many of our patients say their surgery has enhanced their self-confidence.
Risks and Complications
As with all surgical procedures, male breast reduction surgery carries the possibility of complications. Although rare, these complications may include:
Excessive fluid accumulation or loss
Loss of nipple sensation
Asymmetrical breasts or nipples
You can minimize these risks by strictly adhering to your surgeon's instructions for before and after surgery.
Normal healing after gynecomastia surgery involves a limited but definite degree of soreness, swelling, bruising and lumpy firmness. A temporary mild numbness of the skin may persist for up to four months.
Most patients can actually see improvement of their silhouette within several days after surgery. However, because of the slow resolution of the post-surgical swelling, the ultimate results following gynecomastia surgery usually require 12 to 20 weeks to be achieved.
Although the results of gynecomastia surgery are often quite spectacular, it is not realistic to expect perfection. It is impossible to guarantee the precise amount of improvement that will result from the surgery.
Patients should have realistic expectations. Although patients can usually expect to achieve a significant and noticeable improvement, it is unreasonable to expect perfection.
Longevity of Results:
The fat cells and glandular tissue that are removed do not grow back. Although one can expect some hormonal and physical changes with aging, provided that you do not gain large amounts of weight, your new, more pleasing silhouette is relatively permanent.
