After any surgery, patience is required. Recovery is not instantaneous, and you may feel like you’ll never look normal again, let alone see the great results you expected from plastic surgery.

Fortunately, this is most often temporary, and results will appear gradually in the weeks and months following the procedure. Sometimes, however, there are abnormalities that can occur, making it hard to know whether or not to worry.

Some SmartlipoTM patients occasionally experience lumps and bumps following treatment, which can understandably cause concern. But are they really a reason to worry?

Smartlipo Post-Op Lumps: A Cause for Concern?

In most cases, lumps and bumps after Smartlipo should not be a cause for concern right away. They are often a normal part of the healing process and will go away over time. If the problem persists, however, there could be an issue with the contour or healing process.

Sometimes, fluid from the procedure can cause temporary swelling that will resolve itself within about a week or two. If the bumps are still present, it may be a good idea to check with your doctor to make sure it is not a seroma (fluid pocket) or infection.

Due to the normal swelling process, some lumps and bumps may persist for several months, before the final results can be seen. If your doctor has indicated there is no evidence of seroma or infection, you will need to wait things out.

After about six months, it may be a good idea to seek revision treatment if lumps and bumps have not gone away, but until then, massaging the area is a step you can take toward a good result (check with your surgeon before doing this). This increases circulation and encourages extra fluid build-up to be eliminated.
