What is Smartlipo?

Smartlipo is a laser-assisted liposuction procedure that has quickly grown in popularity since it was approved by the FDA in 2007. Many plastic and cosmetic surgeons consider Smartlipo the safest and most effective liposuction method available today. Using laser technology allows the surgeon to liquefy the unwanted fat, leaving only an oily residue behind that can be easily suctioned out from the body via a small cannula.

An added benefit of using a laser during liposuction is that as it breaks down the fat cells, it produces heat. The collagen in the fatty tissue responds to the heat by contracting. This results in tighter skin that adjusts itself to the treated area’s slimmer profile.

Yet another benefit of using laser technology is that it leaves the surrounding tissue relatively undisturbed. Because the blood vessels and nerves are largely left alone, there is less bruising and discomfort during and after the treatment.

Is laser liposuction right for me?

Smartlipo is safe and effective for many types of people with different needs. Our surgeons ask our patients to consider the following factors.

Smartlipo is safe: To earn FDA approval, Smartlipo had to pass rigorous safety requirements set forth by the government. Because of its safe and trustworthy track record, Smartlipo is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments available today.

Smartlipo is effective when exercise fails: We hear from many liposuction candidates that certain areas of their body are completely resistant to exercise. The most common trouble areas are the love handles, tummy pooches, saddlebags, bat wings and neck waddles, among others. Genetic and gender-specific factors can play a role in how stubborn the fat is.

Smartlipo will improve skin laxity: The heat from the Smartlipo laser helps the skin tighten after treatment. Traditional liposuction methods do not include a skin-tightening component, giving Smartlipo the edge. Smartlipo’s laser technology causes the collagen within the skin to contract, resulting in tighter skin in the treated areas.

Smartlipo is affordable: Traditional liposuction requires general anesthesia, which is costly. Smartlipo is performed under local anesthesia and eliminates the fees (and health risks!) of general anesthesia. Also, Smartlipo can be performed at our AAAHC-accredited outpatient surgery centers in Long Island, circumventing hospital fees.

Smartlipo will improve your confidence. Imagine being able to wake up on a summer morning, slip on your bikini and confidently head to the beach. No fidgeting or covering up your figure! For our Smartlipo patients, this is a reality. They do need to maintain a healthy diet and get regular exercise, but they have extra motivation to maintain their beautiful Smartlipo results! What areas of the body will Smartlipo treat?

Smartlipo can treat the following areas of the body:

  • Arms
  • Thighs
  • Love Handles
  • Hips
  • Waist
  • Back
  • Neck
  • Pubic Area
  • Knees
  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Male Breast Area

Will my Smartlipo results be permanent?

To answer that, consider that adults do not create new fat cells. As we gain weight, our existing fat cells simply get larger as they fill up. Smartlipo laser liposuction actually removes most fat cells from the treatment area. They will not grow back. The remaining fat cells are prone to filling up with more fat in the future, should you gain weight, so we advise our liposuction patients to be vigilant with their diet and fitness routine.

In summary: Yes, fat removal with Smartlipo is permanent in the treated areas!

How many Smartlipo sessions will I need?

You will only need one Smartlipo session to see results.

Will Smartlipo treat my cellulite?

Smartlipo should dramatically improve the cottage cheese-like dimpling that characterizes cellulite.

How quickly will I see results after my laser liposuction treatment?

You can expect the treated area to look smoother and trimmer right after your procedure. You may have some local swelling, but this will dissipate within a few weeks. Results will continue to improve for several months.

What will my recovery from Smartlipo be like?

Downtime from Smartlipo is very brief. Many of our patients return to their normal routine within just a few days. If you’re busy with a lot of obligations, Smartlipo will easily fit into your lifestyle. Learn more about Smartlipo recovery.

How long does the procedure take?

Smartlipo treatment is relatively fast, considering how much it can transform the targeted areas. Single or smaller areas take 60 to 90 minutes, on average. Multiple or larger areas can take two to three hours.

What happens during a Smartlipo procedure?

Our Smartlipo surgeon will insert a very small cannula (about 1mm to 2mm in diameter) just beneath the surface of the skin, via a tiny incision. He will insert a laser fiber into the hollow cannula and move it back and forth to deliver the laser beam’s energy to the targeted area. The heat produced by the laser breaks up and liquefies the fat cells so they can be easily suctioned away.

The heat/energy from the laser beam also causes the skin’s collagen matrix to retract and tighten, resulting in a beautifully sculpted and smooth surface. Since the laser beam is so precise in its ability to target the fat cells, the surrounding blood vessels and nerves are largely untouched, so there is: a) less bleeding during the procedure; and b) very little bruising, swelling and discomfort afterward.

Once the targeted areas have been treated, the surgeon will seal the incisions using liquid stitches and apply a compression garment to minimize swelling.

Is laser liposuction painful?

Smartlipo patients do not experience pain during the procedure, thanks to local anesthetic. As the anesthetic wears off, there may be minimal discomfort that can be alleviated with Tylenol every four hours.

The Smartlipo device’s website compares the post-operative feeling to “the aches and pains that follow a vigorous workout.” This is a sentiment echoed by our patients as well during their post-op period.

How much does Smartlipo cost?

The cost of Smartlipo treatment depends on several factors, including the treated areas and the necessary degree of correction. Learn more about Smartlipo costs.
