Although many aspects of SmartlipoTM recovery are significantly more comfortable than with traditional liposuction, there are some inescapable side effects of laser lipo that can occur during the healing process.

One aspect that may not seem like a big deal is itching. However, itchiness can be much more irritating than expected, and you should be prepared to deal with it should it occur.

Let’s talk about some of these minor annoyances that can crop up during recovery.

Itching

Trauma to the tissues and the skin can cause itching after laser liposuction, as well as from compression garments and some other factors.

Itching is a normal part of the healing process, but it is annoying and frustrating for most patients. You should not scratch, as this can cause damage, and can even make itching worse.

You might be able to take antihistamines or bathe with a soothing, oatmeal-based bath additive, but it depends on your recovery stage and your doctor’s instructions.

Dry winter skin can already get itchy, so be sure to ask your plastic surgeon ahead of time about when it’s OK to use oatmeal baths or moisturizer on your skin after surgery.

Nausea

Smartlipo is performed under local anesthesia. However, the local anesthesia, painkillers, medications, and general discomfort can cause temporary nausea in post-op patients. Some patients can start returning to normal activities within a few days, but you may want to budget a few extra days for rest and recovery.

Slight Fever

Although a high fever is a sign of infection after liposuction and should not be taken lightly, a slight fever in the first couple days after surgery is perfectly normal.

It is the body’s response to the procedure, and should not be a cause for concern unless it persists, comes late in the recovery period, or is excessively high.

A fever-reducer such as acetaminophen is safe to use post-op, but avoid other over-the-counter painkillers (until your surgeon gives the green light).

Be Prepared

The best way to deal with post-op problems is to be prepared. Get as much information as you can, and ask your doctor about ways to be prepared for the recovery period. Then follow his or her instructions exactly.

Stock up on supplies you’ll need to stay rested and comfortable. Make sure to discuss with your doctor what is and isn’t recommended beforehand, and prepare accordingly.
