It would be ideal, of course, to be able to instantly erase stubborn pockets of fat and smooth and contour the body without any discomfort, downtime, or scarring, but, unfortunately, all surgical treatments involve at least a little inconvenience.

The good news is that SmartlipoTM laser liposuction is about as good as it gets when it comes to reduced discomfort and a faster recovery for minimally invasive surgery, while delivering great results.

One of the main questions people ask about plastic surgery is how much scarring is involved. This differs between procedures, and there is a large spectrum for post-operative scarring.

So how does Smartlipo stack up?

How the Procedure Works

Smartlipo is generally performed under local anesthetic. Very small incisions are made to accommodate the laser fiber that is used to gently melt excess fat and contour the body.

After the fat has been liquefied, it is suctioned out through a small tube. Patients only need to undergo one treatment per area and downtime is just a few days.

Very Minimal to No Scarring

Because Smartlipo does not involve the large incisions required from liposuction techniques of the past, the occurrence of scarring is far lower than for typical liposuction. The scars from Smartlipo are so small that they do not require stitches and eventually to almost invisible over time.

Furthermore, since the procedure is effective at targeting only the areas to be treated (just the fat), surrounding tissue such as blood vessels and nerves typically do not experience much trauma during the treatment. This makes for a more comfortable recovery with very little blood loss and far less post-op bruising.

The Purpose of Smartlipo

Smartlipo may sound like the ideal solution for targeted fat loss, but it is not an ideal solution for everyone. The treatment is for “problem areas” that do not respond to diet and exercise. However, Smartlipo is not a good solution for weight loss or for removing large quantities of fat.

The heat of the laser helps skin tighten, retract, and produce collagen after surgery, but it can only do so much. If the patient has significant excess skin or laxity, it will likely not retract completely after treatment. Results occur gradually over a period of a few months as the body heals and swelling subsides.
