SmartlipoTM is a gentle laser liposuction technique that effectively contours and sculpts the body while avoiding the lengthy recovery period of traditional liposuction techniques. However, laser lipo is still a surgical procedure, and it does require some rest and recovery.
One of the ways patients can help facilitate good results is by wearing a compression garment for a time following surgery. This is an inconvenient, but necessary part of the recovery process, and patients often have questions about it.
So what do you need to know about compression garments?
The Purpose of Compression Garments
Compression garments are used to compress the surgical area, effectively reducing post-operative fluids by assisting in drainage of tumescent fluid and localized swelling. Compression garments are required during recovery for all liposuction patients.
These garments also help the skin to adhere to the body in its new position after the subcutaneous fat has been removed.
How Long Do You Have to Wear the Garment?
Different doctors have varying standards for how long compression garments should be worn, and this time period can last several weeks. It’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions on this matter, even if the garment seems inconvenient or frustrating.
Initially, the garment is usually worn at all times, aside from in the shower. For several weeks after the initial recovery period, many plastic surgeons recommend the use of non-medical compression garments, like Spanx, for a portion of each day (for example, 12 hours per day).
Caring for Post-Op Garments
Compression garments can easily get smelly, as they are worn for long periods of time and may become soiled by fluid from incision sites following treatment. Because of this, it is important to be diligent in the care and cleaning of your garment(s).
Gentle cold-water washing and air-drying at frequent intervals is recommended for your health, safety, and comfort. Have a backup garment for when your soiled one is in the laundry.
