SmartLipo is a breakthrough technology that uses gentle lasers to melt fat and reshape the body. Patients are typically very pleased with the results, and report short recovery periods, usually just a few days.

Compared to traditional liposuction methods, SmartLipo is a huge step forward in regards to patient comfort, cost, and downtime. So what’s the catch? Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for SmartLipo.

If you’re thinking about moving forward with the procedure, you should first make sure you’re a good candidate for the surgery.

Aesthetic Considerations

SmartLipo is not a surgery for weight loss. While the procedure does remove fat, it is designed for body sculpting and contouring, not significant fat loss. For patients to see the best aesthetic results, they should ideally be at or near their goal weight, with localized “problem areas” of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.

If you are interested in the treatment, but not yet to this point, SmartLipo can be a good incentive to get in shape. While fat cell removal with SmartLipo is permanent, remaining fat cells still have the ability to expand after surgery, which is what causes weight gain. Having solid exercise and diet routines in place will help you stay on track with a healthy lifestyle following surgery.

Health & Habits

SmartLipo is a safe and gentle treatment that is appropriate for a wide number of people. SmartLipo candidates should be in general good health, be non-smokers (or quit at least two weeks beforehand and not smoke afterward), not be pregnant or nursing, and be healthy enough to discontinue certain medications before and immediately after surgery (including blood thinners).

Before discontinuing any medications, speak with the prescribing doctor to be sure you are allowed to do so. Your doctor will discuss your medical history and medications for your own safety, so it’s very important to be honest about everything.

Get Advice from a Liposuction Expert

The only person that can assess individual candidacy for a cosmetic surgical procedure is an experienced surgeon. If you’re not sure if you’re a candidate or not, the only way to find out is to speak to an expert, like our New York cosmetic and plastic surgeons.

Our SmartLipo experts will meet with you to discuss your needs and evaluate whether this procedure is likely to get you the results you want. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the surgery.
