What SmartLipo Can Correct
Smartlipo laser liposuction removes localized areas of excess fat that have accumulated on the body - either due to lifestyle, pregnancy, genetic factors or aging - and improves your overall shape. The most popular treatment areas are the abdomen, waist, back, buttocks, thighs and male breast area. The laser has the additional benefit of tightening the skin in the treated area for a sleeker, firmer overall result.
Am I a Candidate for SmartLipo?
Only an experienced, plastic or cosmetic surgeon should determine who is a suitable candidate for Smartlipo. Potential candidates are encouraged to schedule an informational consultation with our experienced surgeons to review their candidacy. In general, candidates include those who:
- Have certain areas that do not respond to diet and exercise efforts.
- Are within 25 pounds of their ideal weight (Smartlipo is not a weight loss surgery).
- Are free of any serious medical conditions (e.g., cardiovascular conditions, high blood pressure) which could complicate the surgery.
- Desire to get rid of unwanted fat in specific areas of the body.
- Want to tighten the skin in specific areas of the body.
- Have realistic expectations of post-op results.
Advantages of SmartLipo
There are a number of reasons that many of our patients prefer Smartlipo rather than traditional liposuction methods. First, Smartlipo requires a shorter downtime than traditional liposuction. The use of a laser cuts down on the amount of time it takes to recover. Also, because the fat cells are more completely and evenly removed, the results are more precisely sculpted.
Additionally, laser liposuction is more cost-effective than traditional liposuction because it does not require (costly) general anesthesia. Our surgeons perform laser lipo using local anesthetic, thus lowering the overall cost. Finally, laser liposuction is very safe. Not only does the laser-assisted technology minimize blood loss, but because the procedure can be performed with local anesthetic, it eliminates the risks associated with general anesthesia.
The SmartLipo Procedure
Smartlipo is performed on an outpatient basis. Usually, our patients receive a combination of a mild oral sedative and local anesthesia to stave off any discomfort during the procedure. Our surgeon begins by making a very small incision in the treatment area. Through the incision, he inserts a thin, hollow tube containing the Smartlipo laser fiber. The laser delivers thermal light energy to the fat cells to melt them. Once the cells have turned into a liquid state, the surgeon can easily remove them from the body using gentle suction.
Is SmartLipo Safe?
In general, Smartlipo is very safe. Because of the innovative technology and minimally invasive treatment approach, the rate of complications is very low. Rare complications include friction burns, nerve damage, thermal skin injury and the accumulation of excess fluids. Selecting highly-qualified plastic and cosmetic surgeons to perform laser liposuction is an excellent way to minimize the potential risk of complications. Our surgeons have years of experience working with Smartlipo technology and stay current on all laser liposuction techniques and best practices.
Recovering from SmartLipo
Smartlipo patients may have some minor discomfort after their procedure (similar to the general aches one would feel after a tough workout) but this can be managed with oral pain medication. With plenty of rest, many patients recover within just a few days after surgery. Learn more about Smartlipo recovery.

About Our Centers
Safety is our top priority, so we do everything possible to create a safe experience for each of our patients. Our surgery suites in Long Island are AAAHC accredited. This means that the stringent guidelines for sterility, equipment, and quality health care are all being met by our surgery centers. The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care has been the leader in medical, surgical and dental accreditation since 1979. We have consistently exceeded the standards set by the AAAHC every year and will continue doing so.
Our laser lipo surgery centers are among the best in the state. One of the emotions that our patients feel on the day of their procedure is anxiety. Having this knowledge, our staff is attuned to comforting, caring for, and easing the nerves of our anxious patients. You’ll feel comfortable and welcomed the moment you step foot into the surgery center. Most patients tell us that they were treated like family; that’s exactly what our goal is! You will receive personalized and attentive care no matter what type of procedure you come in for.
We have many patients who decide to come back to us for additional procedures as well as those who are referred to us by patients of ours. Depending upon the type of procedure you have done, local OR general anesthesia will be used. For patients having SmartLipo, for example, local anesthetic is used and the procedure is very short (only about 60-90 minutes for smaller areas and 2-3 hours for larger or multiple areas). For other procedures such as breast augmentation, general anesthesia must be used. We have a comfortable and soothing recovery area for you to wake up in and you can go home shortly after your surgical procedure. We can arrange for transportation to and from our surgery center if you need (fee applies).
